John Hutchings

I left Calday Grange Grammar School in 1962. Shortly afterwards my parents moved away from the area and I had no further contact with the school. Yet over 40 years later on a training event when I was asked to name the most inspirational person I had ever known I had no hesitation in saying it was my old headmaster. Two things sprang especially to mind. The first was organising groups of us to go and help fit out a youth club being set up by a church in a deprived area of Liverpool, but more particularly I will remember his addressing school assembly the day after Dag Hammarskjöld, the United Nations Secretary General, was killed in a plane crash in the Congo, and how he communicated to us his intense sadness at the untimely death of a man who had only wanted to do good.
