Every Christmas, for about 25 years, we met in York for a family "get together". I remember "Uncle Eric" as a wonderfully gentle and modest man who always took a lively interest in those around him. I was always pleased if I was seated next to him for the meal because he was so easy to talk to. We used to joke about how slowly he ate - but that's probably because he was busy talking to someone and making them feel special.
